Nanjing In Brief

Nanjing, called "Ning" for short, is the capital of Jiangsu Province of southeast China. Located in the middle reach of Yangtze river  running through the city, it is about 1,200 kilometers south   Beijing ,300 kilometers west   Shanghai .With  the population of 5,180,000 ,it covers a total area of 6,598km.It is a transport and telecommunication hub in East China, culturally strong province in China and the second largest international trade port after Shanghai in the Yangtze River Delta.

Historically known as Jinling, Jianye, Jiankang, Jiangning or Tianjing, Nanjing ranks with Xi'an, Luoyang, Beijing, Hangzhou, and Kaifeng as six major ancient Chinese capitals.As an once capital of 10 differnt dynasties ,Nanjing city has a long history of over 2,400 years since the emergency of its walled city. There remain a large number of historical relics including stone carvings which has survived 1,400 years,the Ming maosuleum listed as UNESCO world cultural heritage, Zhonghua Gate which is the lagest one in the world,confusicus temple, the Beamless Hall in Linggu (Soul Valley) Temple,and so on. By tracing them, one can understand  her deep  culture .

Nanjing is also a picturesque city hard to find in the world for its unique organic blend of mountains,waters,city wall and forest. It has  undulating hills and mountains on all four sides, with the towering Zijinshan (Purple Mountain) in the east; the craggy Mufu Hill in the north; the crouching tiger-like Qingliang (Cool and Refreshing) Hill in the west; the Rain Flower Terrace (Yuhuatai) in the south, renowned for its colorful pebbles; the Niushou (Ox Head) Hill, the birthplace of the Niutou (Ox Pate) Sect of Chinese Buddhism, and the Zutang Hill, site of the mausoleums of the first and second Southern Tang emperors Li Bian (937-943) and Li Jing (943-961); the Qixia (Cloud Nesting) Hill in the northeast, which is crimsoned through by its serried red maple and oak woods deep-dyed in the depth of autumn; and the Swallow Cliff (Yanziji) precipitously overlooking the Yangtze River like a swallow about to take flight.Apart from hills and mountains, Nanjing has many rivers and lakes  spreading or winding through  the city, such as the Qinhuai River, Jinchuan, Xuanwu Lake and Mochou Lake, as well as the Yangtze River.
Present-day Nanjing has been undergoing a striking ecnomic construction that make it take on a new look while retaining the old characteristics, a perfect example of  combination of the morden and  the ancient. Nanjing also enjoys reputation abroad. Now it has entered into amical relations with Nagoya of Japan, Florence of Italy, Saint Louis of the United States, Eindhoven of the Netherlands, Leipzig of Germany, Mecicali of Mexico, Limassol of Cyprus and Daijun of the Republic of Korea to make an extensive exchange and cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, science and technology and culture, and joined the Transpacific Technical cooperation Network as one of two member cities from China.
