Republic of China

NL is renowned for its preeminence in the holding of materials of the Republic of China mainly composed of three parts. One is the large part of the collections of the National Central Library and Jiangsu Provincial Library of Chinese Studies that were taken over from KMT government when it retreated from Nanjing and brought a small part of the collections to Taiwan. The second is a large number of documents used to be preserved in the governmental institutes, organizations and the Central University of Political Science. The third is the collections handed by Japanese Tongwen Academy and British Cultural Committee.

So far NL holds more than 700,000 volumes of archives during the Republic of China period, including more than 400,000 books, nearly 10,000 volumes of periodicals and thousands of newspapers, covering a wide range of fields such as politics, economy, military, culture, education, science and sports. Among them the collection of governmental publications tops China in terms of the large quantity and diversity, from the local and central governmental gazettes, conference proceedings, decrees,laws and regulations, to important documents about the parliament, the Congress, the national assembly, and institutes of KMT. What’s more, NL also specializes in holding the early publications of Communist Party that honestly record its growing course and the great endeavor for the triumph of the Revolution.
